Sop for operation, cleaning & calibration of Brookfield Viscometer

I. Purpose & Scope:

  • The purpose of this SOP is to lay down the procedure for operation, cleaning & calibration of Brookfield Viscometer
  • This procedure is applicable for Operation, cleaning & calibration of Brookfield Viscometer used in quality control laboratory

II. Responsibilities:

• All Quality Control and Quality Assurance personnel’s shall be responsible to follow and implement this SOP.

III : Introduction and Procedural Part :

A) OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR BROOKFIELD VISCOMETER:

Preliminary Check :

  • Ensure that the instrument is calibrated.
  • Ensure that the system is connected to the power supply and the supply is switch ON.
  • Ensure that all solvent tubes are dipped in the solvent bottle. Ensure that the waste is empty.

Cleaning procedure

  • Clean the instrument with a clean dry cloth before using.
  • Occasionally clean the instruments with a wet cloth dipped in liquid detergents 0.1 % Teepol solution and clean immediately with dry cloth.

Operating Procedure :

  • Clean the instrument with a clean dry cloth before using.
  • Adjust the level with the help of inbuilt sprit level.
  • Set up the instrumental parameter according to the instruction manual.
  • Attach spindle as per the individual monograph to the lower shaft, It is Suggested to lift the shaft slightly while it is firmly with one hand while turning the spindle with the other hand.
  • Condition the temperature at 25° C or at desired temperature as mentioned in the individual specification.
  • Insert the required spindle in the test material until the fluid’s level is at the immersion groove marked on the spindle.
  • Adjust the required rpm of the instrument.
  • Press the Start key of the viscometer and allow time for the indicating reading to stabilize. The time required for stabilization will depend on the speed at which the viscometer is running and characteristics of the fluid. for maximum accuracy, reading below 10 % should be avoided.
  • Read the viscosity at the specified time. When an exact time is not specified, the reading should be recorded rapidly between 2 and 5 minutes. Report as a result the display reading at the specified time if a constant values of 10. If not (display readings drift up or down), recorded the maximum and minimum values and report average reading.
  • The viscosity of the sample is obtained in “cPs”
  • Press the Off/Stop key and turns the motor “OFF” when changing a spindle or changing samples .Remove spindle before cleaning.
  • Clean the spindle immediately after use.

B) Calibration Procedure for Brookfield viscometer:

  • Calibration should only be done under controlled condition of temperature.
  • Calibrate the viscometer with standard viscosity solution non-toxic silicon fluids supplied by manufacture.
  • Standard viscosity solution shall be replaced after 3 years.
  • Viscometer shall be calibrated by using viscosity standards of 5000 cps
  • Fill the fluid in 500 ml beaker.
  • Condition the fluid of 5000 cps, use spindle no RV.4 at rpm 30
  • Operate the instrument as per Operating Instructions.
  • Note down the reading. The viscosity shall be determined in triplicate and Average of triplicate value shall be considered.
  • Transfer back the standard silicon fluid in their respective container.
  • The acceptance criteria shall be ± 5 % of the actual value for 5000 cps standard.
  • Record the observations in the Calibration record in Annexure I.
  • Enter the calibration details on “CALIBRATION LABEL” affixed on the instrument. As per SOP
  • Report any discrepancy observed during calibration or operation of the instrument to the Quality Assurance Manager and notify the defect to Engineering Department. affix an “ UNDER MAINTENANCE” label on the instrument.
  • Calibration Frequency: Quarterly and after each maintenance job.
