Standard Test Procedure for Printed Aluminium Foil

1.Description:

Following visual checking to be carried out.

Procedure:

Examine the foil in day light for appearance.

Foil role should receive in properly wrapped with polythene bag and final packing in corrugated box.The foil roll edges should not be dent. Free from wrinkles and crease. Free from stains and foreign matters Printed blister foil (hard), having VMCH coating on back side. Put a finger in acetone and that finger touch to VMCH coating side, foil will stick to the finger which indicates presence of VMCH coating. Hold the piece of foil in hand, and shake it hard foil make crackling noise.

2. Identification BY IR

 Instrument: IR

Procedure:  Follow the procedure of SOP for operation of  FTIR SOP and record the spectrum . The infrared absorption spectrum of the Printed   Aluminium Foil is concordant with the reference spectrum of Aluminium Foil.

3. Width:

(Test to be performed on maximum five pieces on sampled rolls)

Instrument: Scale

Procedure: Measure the width of foil in mm by using scale.

4. Thickness in microns:

(Test to be performed on maximum five pieces on sampled rolls)

Instrument: Digital Micrometer

Procedure: To find out thickness of individual layers we need to separate the VMCH coating and foil. Follow the procedure given under grammage of VMCH coating for removal of VMCH coating Measure the thickness of foil without VMCH with micrometer screw gauge.

There is another formula to find out thickness of foil as given below:

Grammage of foil

Thickness in micron = ——————————————————–

Specific gravity of foil (density of foil)

Density of aluminum is 2.71

5. Text matter:

Procedure: Check visually and compare with approved art work or approved specimen.

6. Color scheme:

7. Printing quality:

8. Ink lifting:

Procedure: Affix the cello tape on the printed side of foil, and lift it, no ink should stick to the cello tape.

9.Pin holes:

(Test to be performed on maximum five pieces on sampled rolls)

Procedure: Foil check against the light and count the number of pin holes per square inch

10.Winding:

(Test to be performed on maximum five sampled rolls)

Procedure: Check visually that winding is tight on the roll.

11. Core diameter:

(Test to be performed on maximum five sampled rolls)

Procedure: Measure with core diameter in mm by using Vernier caliper.

12. Splicer/joint:

(Test to be performed on maximum five sampled rolls)

Procedure: Preferably no joints allowed but Maximum 2 splicer/joint are allowed with proper matching of text matter by affixing red tape for identification purpose.

13. Grammage of foil (without VMCH):

(Test to be performed on maximum 5 pieces on sampled rolls)

Instrument: Scale

Procedure: Cut the 10 x 10 cms piece of foil by using scale and cutter.Weigh the piece on analytical balance, note down the weight in test data sheet (W1).Take 500 ml glass beaker, put acetone up to ¾ th of beaker. Immerse cute piece of size 10 x 10 cms in the beaker, Keept for about ½ an hour

The VMCH coating will dissolve in acetone and left with foil only.Dry the foil at room temperature and weighed the dried foil on analytical balance (W2)

Calculate the grammage of foil as per formula given below

 Calculation:

14. Grammage of VMCH coating:

(Test to be performed on maximum five pieces on sampled rolls)

Instrument: Scale

Procedure: Cut the 10 x 10 cms piece of foil by using scale and cutter

Weigh the piece on analytical balance, note down the weight in test data sheet (W1) Take 500 ml glass beaker, put acetone up to ¾ th of beaker.Immersed cut pcs of size 10 x 10 cms in the beaker, Keep for about ½ an hour.The VMCH coating will dissolve in acetone and left with foil only.Dry the foil at room temperature and weigh the dried foil on analytical balance. Note down the weight in test data sheet (W2)

The difference between two weights (W1 – W2) = (W3); W3 is the weight of VMCH coating

Calculate the grammage of VMCH as per formula given below:

15. Total Grammage:

Procedure: Cut the 10 x 10 cms piece of foil by using scale and cutter

Weigh the piece on analytical balance, note down the weight in test data sheet (W1).
