I. Purpose & Scope:

  • The Purpose of this SOP is to lay down the procedure for operation and calibration of vacuum oven .
  • This procedure is applicable for operation, cleaning and calibration of vacuum oven used in Quality Control Department

II. Responsibilities:

  • All Quality Control personnel shall be responsible to follow and implement this SOP.

III : Introduction and Procedural Part :

General Cleaning :

  • Clean the instrument with a clean dry cloth every day. Occasionally wet cloth dipped in dilute soap solution may be used.
  • A Precaution has to be taken to clean the instrument immediately with dry cloth to remove the moisture.

Precautions :

  • Do not open the door frequently.
  • Do not keep inflammable solvents in oven.
  • Place equipment at designated location on leveled floor.
  • Maintain sufficient distance around the equipment for operator movement.
  • Open door of equipment and place trays /racks in position. Close door firmly.
  • Set the temperature required and depending upon temperature
  • Requirement set the 3 way switch to desired position.(set- 1 temperature up to 100°C, Set 2 temperature 101°C to  200°C set 3 temperature 201°C to 300°C
  • Set temperature controller to required temperature.

Basic Operation :

  • Ensure that the vacuum valve and door of the oven is closed. Switch ON the instrument.
  • The red colour display will indicate the actual temperature and yellow colour display will indicate the previously set temperature.
  • Set the desired temperature by pressing press “▲” key to increase and “▼” key to decrease setting.
  • Allow the instrument to reach the set temperature.
  • Open the door and introduce sample to be dried and follow respective

Procedure / Specification :

  • Close the door of the oven.
  • Connect the tube of vacuum to vacuum nozzle.
  • Rotate the vacuum valve in anticlockwise direction to open the valve.
  • Apply the vacuum up to the desired value (as indicated on the pressure gauge) and close the valve by rotating in clockwise direction. (1Kpa = 0.75 mm).
  • Disconnect the vacuum tube and carry out the drying of the sample. Be sure that the applied vacuum remains constant during testing.
  • When the drying under vacuum is in progress, put a label on the vacuum oven.
  • After completion of drying release the vacuum slowly by rotating the vacuum valve in anticlockwise direction.
  • Open the door and remove the sample from oven.
  • Close the door and switch OFF the main switch of the instrument.

Calibration :

Calibration Frequency:
  • Calibration done by external Agency once in year.
  • Handle the out of calibration results as per specified SOP
  • Maintain the instrument usage log book as per SOP Handling of instrument usage log book
