Standard test procedure for PVC/PVDC Film

1.Description:

Following visual checking to be carried out:

Procedure: Examine the foil in day light for appearance

Foil roll should receive in properly wrapped with polythene bag and final packing in corrugated box. The foil roll edges should not be dent. Free from pit marks. Free from stains and foreign matters

2. Identification BY IR:

Instrument: IR

Follow the procedure given under Grammage for separation of PVC and PVDC layers. Examine by infrared absorption spectrometer of PVC Film. The material to be examined shows absorption maxima   at   2975 cm¹, 2910 cm¹,  2865 cm¹,  1430 cm¹, 1330 cm¹, 1255 cm¹,  690 cm¹,  615cm¹

3.Width:

(Test to be performed on maximum five pieces on sampled rolls)

Instrument: Scale

Measure the width of foil in mm by using foot ruler.

4. Thickness of PVC Film in mm:

(Test to be performed on maximum five pieces on sampled rolls)

Instrument: Digital Micrometer

Procedure: To find out thickness of individual layers we need to separate the PVC and PVDC layer. Follow the procedure given under Grammage for separation of layers. Measure the thickness of PVC film with micrometer screw gauge or vernier caliper. Note down the reading in test data sheet.

5.Total Thickness of film in mm:

(Test to be performed on maximum five pieces on sampled rolls)

 Instrument: Digital Micrometer

Procedure: To find out thickness of film Measure the thickness of film with micrometer screw gauge or vernier caliper.

Note down the reading in test data sheet of Standard test procedure for PVC/PVDC Film.

6. Winding:

(Test to be performed on maximum five sampled rolls)

Procedure: Check visually that winding is tight on the roll.

Note down the reading in test data sheet

7. Core diameter:

(Test to be performed on maximum five sampled rolls)

Instrument: Scale

Procedure: Measure with either foot ruler or Scale

8.Total Grammage:

(Test to be performed on maximum five pieces on sampled rolls)

Instrument: Scale

Procedure: Cut the 5 x 5 cms piece of film by using scale and cutter. Weigh the piece on analytical balance, note down the weight in test data sheet (W1). Take 500 ml glass beaker, put Ethyl acetate up to 3/4^th of beaker. Immersed cut pcs of size 5 x 5 cms in the beaker, Keep for about ½ an hour. The PVC layer will get seprated from PVDC. Dry the PVC and PVDC layer at room temperature. Weigh the dried PVC layer on analytical balance (W2). Weigh the dried PVDC layer on analytical balance (W3)

9. Grammage of PVC/PVDC film:

Calculate the grammage of the PVC/PVDC film as per formula given below

 

Weight of film (W1) in gm              10000

10. Grammage of PVC film:

Calculate the grammage of PVC layer as per formula given below

There is another formula to find out grammage of PVC film as given below.

gsm of PVC film   = Grammage of PVC/PVDC film – Grammage of PVDC film

11.Grammage of PVDC film:

Calculate the grammage of PVDC layer as per formula given below

Weight of PVDC layer (W3) in gm                     10000

Gsm of PVDC layer   =      ——————————————–  x  ————————

Length of piece in cms                    width of piece in cms

There is another formula to find out grammage of PVDC film as given below.

gsm of PVDC film           = Grammage of PVC/PVDC film – Grammage of PVC film
