Standard Test Procedure for Shipper

This article describes Standard Test Procedure for Shipper, which is used in packing operations as a tertiary packing material to pack the cartons and bottles.

Standard Test Procedure for Shipper

Procedural Part for standard test procedure for Shipper:

1. Description:

Following visual checking to be carried out:

Procedure: Examine the corrugated box in day light for appearance brownish color fluted kraft paper stuck with flat kraft paper with starch base adhesive to form the corrugated box (shipper). On folding flaps there shouldn’t cracking /breaking at creasing. There shouldn’t delimitation of ply’s. On closing corrugated box (shipper) flaps should properly meet with each other. No overlapping or No gap between two flaps. Count the ply’s & note down the number of ply’s. corrugated box (shipper) should receive in dried condition.

2. Weight of Corrugated Box (shipper):

(Test to be performed on three samples)

Instrument used : Top Pan Balance

Procedure: Select randomly three corrugated box (shippers) from the consignment. Weigh the selected corrugated box (shipper) on top pan balance.

3. Item code:

(Test to be performed on one samples)

Procedure: Select randomly one corrugated box (shippers) from the consignment. Check visually item code print or stamp on corrugated box (shippers).

4.Type of flute:

(Test to be performed on one samples)

Instrument: Scale

Procedure: Cut the 10 x 10 cms piece of corrugated box (shipper) box by using scale and cutter. Take 500 ml glass beaker, put warm water up to ¾ th of beaker. Immersed cut pieces of size 10 x 10 cms in the beaker, Keep for about ½ an hour. Now separate individual ply’s. Dry them at room tempreture or    keep in oven at 105 ºC for 10 minutes. Make the fluted paper straight with roller or any such device.  Check the elongation of fluted paper with foot ruler.

5.Direct Grammage:

(Test to be performed on one samples)

Instrument: Analytical Balance

Procedure: Cut the 10 X 10 cms piece of corrugated box (shipper) by using scale and cutter Weigh the piece on analytical balance, note down the weight in test data sheet.

Calculate the grammage as per formula given below.

Weight of piece in gm                              10000

GSM=    ———————————–    x       ———————————–

Length of piece in cms                      width of piece in cms

6.Individual Grammage:

(Test to be performed only for investigation purpose)

Instrument: Analytical Balance

Procedure: Cut the 10 x 10 cms piece of corrugated box (shipper) by using scale and cutter. Take 500 ml glass beaker, put warm water up to ¾th of beaker. Immersed cut piece of size 10 x 10 cms in the beaker, Keep for about ½ an hour.  Now separate individual ply’s. Dry them at room temperature (RT) or keep in oven at 105ºC for 10 minutes. Make the fluted paper straight with roller or any such device. Check the elongation of fluted paper with foot ruler. Now cut the elongated portion with scissor so that fluted paper have same size as 10 x 10 cms. Weigh all individual ply’s on analytical balance & find out Grammage as per formula given below.

Weight of piece in gm                              10000

GSM=    ———————————–    x       —————————

Length of piece in cms                      width of piece in cms

7.Flute-ply Ratio:

(Test to be performed only for investigation purpose)

Instruments: Scale

Procedure: Cut the 10 x 10 cms piece of corrugated box (shipper) by using scale and cutter. Take 500 ml glass beaker, put warm water up to ¾ th of beaker. Immersed cut pieces of size 10 x 10 cms in the beaker, Keep for about ½ an hour. Now separate individual ply’s. Dry them at room tempreture or keep in oven at 105 degree centigrade for 10 minutes. Make the fluted paper straight with roller or any such device. Check the elongation of fluted paper with foot ruler.

11.Stitches (Pins):

(Test to be performed on one samples)

 Instrument: Scale

Procedure: Check visually Stitches (Pins) on corrugated box (shippers). It is made-up of MS, rust proof. Joint closed with pair of stitches at top and bottom, and in between single stitch, the measure the distance between two stitches about 35 to 40 mm.
