5. Loss on drying:

(Determined on 5.0 g of sample at 105 °c for 3 hrs.)

    Instrument: Vacuum Oven

Procedure: Weigh the LOD bottle with stopper that has been previously dried at 105 0 C ± 2 °C. For at least ½ hours. Note down the weight in test data sheet (W1).

Place the 5.0 gm of sample in LOD bottle cover it and accurately weigh the bottle along with sample. Note down the weight in test data sheet (W2).

Distribute the sample as evenly as practicable by gentle sidewise shaking to a depth Place the loaded bottle in the drying chamber (LOD oven) remove the stopper and leave it also in the chamber Dry them at 105 0 C ± 2 °C. Sample for 3 hrs. After drying is completed, open the drying chamber, close the bottle promptly and allow it to cool to room temperature in desiccators. Before weighing weigh the bottle and the contents. Note down the weight into test data sheet (W3).

For ‘constant weight’ again place the loaded bottle in the drying chamber remove the stopper and leave it also in the chamber. Dry the sample for 1 hrs. in same condition.  After drying is completed, open the drying chamber, close the bottle promptly and allow it to cool to room temperature in desiccators. Before weighing weigh the bottle and the contents. Note down the weight in test data sheet (W4).

Those two consecutive weighing W3 and W4 do not differ by more than 0.5 mg,
