Sop for Sodium Meta Bi-Sulphate solution preparation (SMBS).

This Document describes (Standard Operating procedure) SOP for Sodium Meta Bi-Sulphate solution preparation (SMBS). SMBS solution used in water plant for dechlorination purpose i.e. It is reducing or eliminating chlorine levels in water. Chlorine is commonly used as a disinfectant in water.

SOP for Sodium Meta Bi-Sulphate solution preparation.

(SMBS)

I. Purpose & Scope:

  • The Purpose of this SOP is to lay down the procedure for Sodium Meta Bi-Sulphate solution preparation (SMBS)
  • This procedure is applicable Engineering Department personnel for Sodium Meta Bi-Sulphate  solution preparation (SMBS).

II. Responsibilities:

  • All Engineering personnel shall be responsible to follow and implement this SOP.

III. Introduction and Procedural Part:

Sodium Meta Bi-Sulphite Dosing System (Dosage of 4 PPM for Dechlorination):

  • Ensure that Sodium metabisulphite tank is cleaned with Purified water.
  • Prepare sodium metabisulphite solution in the tank.
  • Clean the dosing tank.
  • Suspended matter should not be present.
  • Suction float of the dosing pump should be properly immersed in the dosing solution.
  • For proper dosage, check no air is locked in the suction & discharge side of dosing tube.
  • Add 54 gms. of sodium metabisulphite of LR grade in the tank & add 20 liter. of RO permeate water.
  • The flow rate of the dosing pump should be maintained 30 strokes per minute.

Solution calculation:

Concentration of SMBS (C) 96 %
PPM of SMBS to be Dosed (D) 4.0 PPM
No. of hours of operation (H) 8 hrs.
Flow in m3/hr (F) 1.6 m3hr
Amount of SMBS required  (F X H X D) / (D X C),(1.6 X 8 X 4) / ( 10 X 96) = 0.054 kg
  • Sample should be taken after cartridge filter sampling point since it provides proper mixing of sodium metabisulphite in the RO feed water Dechlorination.
  • Free chlorine should be nil.
  • All data shall be monitored & logged in Annexure I

IV: Annexure I:

Annexure I : Sodium Meta Bi-Sulphite solution preparation log (SMBS)
